Yes, They Cannes

Yes, They Cannes

Notorious amongst the fashion crowd as an it-place to see and be seen, the Festival de Cannes is an ideal barometer of summer fashion trends. Anybody who’s anybody is there – and usually they are dressed to the nines. Since today concluded the twelfth day of the film festival, the VCFS team decided to round up our top outfit picks and see what sort of summer trends we should be expecting based off the fashion elite’s Cannes wardrobes.

10. Immy Waterhouse in Dior

You may not recognize her, but Immy Waterhouse is going to be a big face in the next few years. Joining the ranks of other sister-model duos such as the gorgeous Hadid girls, Immy is Suki Waterhouse’s younger, but equally cool, sister. Currently studying to be an actress but you know… just doing the whole supermodel, Cannes red carpet thing as a side gig. Not a big deal.  Windswept hair, and beautifully understated makeup, wearing Dior… she’s got the whole English-rose red carpet look down pat.

9. Lea Seydoux in Miu Miu

We’re loving co-ordinated two piece outfits over here at VCFS right now, so take a page from French actress, Lea Seydoux’s book and give it a try. Seydoux was looking perfectly put together in this dazzling Miu Miu pale blue dress and stunning chandelier earrings.

8. Thaila Ayala in Teca by Helo Rocha

Brazilian actress and model Thaila Ayala may not be the most famous face on our list but her great style earned her a spot in the top ten. Her off the shoulder, lacy white ensemble can and should be mimicked for almost any summer adventure – from music festivals to walks along a beach boardwalk, ice cream in hand.

7. Sienna Miller in Sonia Rykiel

Sienna Miller is so reliable. She consistently pulls through with the coolest, most daring outfits that she somehow makes look effortless. Wearing this Sonia Rykiel sheer gown-bodysuit-cape ensemble, Sienna looks like a star. You are what you wear, we suppose.

6. Natalie Portman in Dior

Being the face of Dior parfums, Portman’s choice of gown designer must have been a natural one for the actress. Looking radiant, she seems to have taken a page from an icon of Cannes’ red carpet’s past – emulating Grace Kelly with her sleek and elegant wardrobe choices.

5. Sara Sampaio in Stella McCartney

You’ve probably seen Portuguese beauty, Sara Sampaio, stamping her way down a runway very similar to ours – the VSFS runway that is. Sara picked a stunning and simple cobalt blue Stella McCartney dress that made her look like a mermaid who walked right out of the French Riviera and onto the red carpet. The colour accentuated her gorgeous tan and suited the scene considering all the blues and white outfits that tend to crop up at Cannes.

4. Rachel Weisz in Narciso Rodriguez

We love seeing actresses step away from the typical gowns and skirts that tend to define events such as these to try something a little bit different. Rachel Weisz is cool and refined in this cutout Narciso Rodriguez jumpsuit and if you look closely, her fringe earrings are a trés chic addition. Perfect for a day to night ensemble.

3. Salma Hayek in Gucci

It seems that her husband being CEO of the company that owns Gucci is a perfect fit (pun fully intended). Hayek is an absolute bombshell in this dress, continuing on a trend that we have seen with all of the best dressed winners thus far – this summer is all about classic silhouettes, and simple designs. Perhaps this marks an important fashion shift away from the bedazzled, jewelled and intricate designs from fashion houses such as Balmain and Elie Saab to more understated, yet equally alluring looks. Time can only tell.

2. Karlie Kloss in Oscar de la Renta

Following the lead of Salma and Sara, Kloss doesn’t shy away from a bright colour in a form flattering cut. Donning a bold and beautiful cerulean (yes, cerulean – just call us Miranda Priestly) gown with black floral appliqués from the late designer, Oscar de la Renta, might just be the perfect form of homage.

1. Emma Stone in Dior

Emma Stone was the clear winner for us and not just because her outfit means that we can pull out our chokers from elementary school without shame. She looked statuesque and glowing, with a pulled back up-do, letting her natural beauty shine through with minimal makeup.

Well, those were our top picks – what were yours? Comment your top picks and let us know if you think we missed any!

Lots of Vogue love!
